Formula: How to Answer “Where do you see yourself in 5 Years?”

It’s best to prepare for interview questions such as ‘where do you see yourself in five years?’ before you get to the actual interview. This ensures you provide well-thought-out answers and successfully convey the message you’re trying to get across to the hiring manager.

The following are the 3 tips you can take to prepare for and answer this interview question:

1. Stay Grounded and Avoid Unrealistically Expectations:

While giving your answer it is very important to stay grounded and not talk about unrealistic expectations. Try to more concentrate on talking about what you will do instead of who you will be.

For e.g., if you are mentioning any position such as after 5 years I will be CEO or CMO of the company. This will give a wrong impact on the hiring manager. They got a feeling that you are over-ambitious and you will be not happy if the growth doesn’t escalate to that speed.

Basically, for this special reason, interviewers are slightly interested in hiring you and you don’t want this.

2. Present Your Answers as Actions & not Goals

The best way to answer is to present your answers as actions and not goals. What does it mean?

While mentioning a set of actions you will undertake to help facilitate your growth and not the final goal by itself will show you that how solely focused you are on this role.

#1. Instead of mentioning that “I will be the head of the editorial team in the next 5 years” talk about the actions you will take to reach this position.

For e.g.

I am excited about the opportunity of being a blogger at your company. So, for the first 1-2 years, I’d like to continue developing my writing skills and once I’ve established my credibility and have a thorough understanding of the company’s protocol, in the next 3-5 years, I’d like to see this role turn into a bit of an editorial position where I build strategies for the editorial team and also help edit other writers work.

#2. It is the best advice to break your answer into two parts one as short term goals and another as long term goals.

Short term goals can be about using your current skills and getting to know the company better. Long term goals can be about taking up more responsibilities, solving the company’s problems, etc.

This will show how excited you are to learn new skills and at the same time it also shows that your learning will help the company in the future.

3. Be Honest

Basically, you have to understand that the interviews already knows that the people tend to lie in the interview and they have already heard it all. So the best way to impress the recruiter is to by “Honesty”.

It’s okay not to know what you’ll be doing in the next 5 years. Take this question as a practice and think about what you like doing and what are beneficial for your future. Take your time to think about what you want to do in your life and present your answers well. This way there are more chances for you to be hired.

I can feed my knowledge with the experience of the existing work team. This experience can then be put to use for the progress of the organization. Having said that, the five years can lay a solid foundation for my career. I plan to build floors of success on the foundation. This is where I see myself in the upcoming five years.”

Example No.3: “In five years I would like to expand my horizons by jumping in feet first and learning as much as I can, as quickly as I can, with the organization. I’d love to participate in at least one project geared toward leadership training if the opportunity arises. I also understand that the organization has a strong volunteer team, and I’d like to be an active participant in that team, as well.
